I get asked this a lot. Here are my best guesses of what Buddy might be made of. At least until I can get him DNA tested ;).
1. Otterhound
"The large and rough-coated Otterhound was originally bred for hunting otter in England. Built for work, the dog breed has a keen nose and renowned stamina. He is also a playful clown, friendly and affectionate with his family. He is an uncommon breed, with fewer than 10 Otterhound litters born each year in the United States and Canada."
Since Otterhounds are so rare, I doubt he is one, but I'll be darned if he doesn't look like one!
2. Airedale Terrier
"Known as the "King of Terriers," the Airedale is indeed the largest of all terriers. The dog breed originated in the Aire Valley of Yorkshire, and was created to catch otters and rats in the region between the Aire and Wharfe Rivers. An able sporting dog, he became an ideal working dog as well, proving his worth during World War I. Intelligent, outgoing, and confident, the Airedale possesses a wonderful playful streak that delights his owners."
Hmm, another otter hunter? Maybe we'll have to take him otter hunting to find out if he's either of these breeds! (Just kidding of course.)
3. English Foxhound
"The English Foxhound was originally a hunting dog breed, designed to pursue foxes in the English countryside. Today he also enjoys life as a family companion and competes in the conformation ring. Many English Foxhounds also compete in Foxhound Performance Trials, which grade the dogs on their pack hunting skills."
One thing I'm pretty sure of about Buddy is that he has some sort of hound in him. He has that signature follow-his-nose hound trait, and he can howl like hound as well.
4. Irish Terrier
"The Irish Terrier dog breed was once described as the 'poor man's sentinel, the farmer's friend, and the gentleman's favorite.' Rugged and stouthearted, he has the advantages of a convenient size, versatile abilities as a companion, watchdog, and vermin dispatcher, and high trainability."
This guys seems to be a little small to be part of Buddy's heritage, they only get up to 27lb usually...but I guess stranger things have happened.
5. Golden Retriever
"The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. The breed's friendly, tolerant attitude makes him a fabulous family pet, and his intelligence makes him a highly capable working dog. Golden Retrievers excel at retrieving game for hunters, tracking, sniffing out drugs, and as therapy and assistance dogs. They're also natural athletes, and do well in dog sports such as agility and competitive obedience."
Ok so this is a major outlier, but something about Buddy's face, his goofy smile, and his laid back personality make me think he could have maybe just a smidge of Golden in him. Call me crazy.
